KickStart Sport is a Sport England funded sport volunteering project that is seeking to engage inactive and vulnerable young people ages 11-13, who may be facing disadvantage, disruption or inequality in their lives.
The project takes young people on a journey of education, mentoring and inspiration, with the aim of developing a healthy youth in an active community.
In partnership with a number of local secondary schools, the project has so far engaged over 90 year seven and eight students and provided them with the opportunity to learn what it means to inspire others.
Each group meet once a week over a 12-week period to develop their leadership skills, which builds up to a Sports Festival at the end of the scheme. Each group splits into pairs and they then create mini activities, where they have to think about their participants, area, communication and equipment, whilst also ensuring their activity is also fun, safe and involves teamwork. At the end of the scheme the lead coach will then decide if the participants have passed the course with certificates being awarded.
