Blue Kitchen Back to Work is a free, 12-week practical, into-work cooking course that introduces and develops essential cookery skills and techniques for the complete beginner. Running alongside this and as part of the into-work element of the course, CV building and basic literacy and numeracy skills is delivered by a member of our teaching staff.
The course is aimed at unemployed and socially inactive individuals who might be complete novices or in need of refreshing and updating previous skills. With the into-work elements embedded, it will create a pathway into employment, training, further education, or volunteering.
Courses are run in our state-of-the-art training kitchen and led by our own community chef. The kitchen has eight separate stations, allowing for social distancing and health and safety guidelines to be followed. All equipment and resources are provided and participants get to take home their culinary delights to share.
Weekly sessions start by building kitchen confidence, introducing equipment and foodstuffs, and prepping and cooking basic dishes. This practical activity is backed up with information on basic nutrition, healthy eating plans, health and safety and smart shopping.
Participants have the opportunity to gain at least a Level 2 in Food Safety & Hygiene by the end of the course. This qualification will enable them to work and volunteer in the food and catering industry. As the Food Safety certification is made up of 4 Levels there is plenty of scope for progression or advancement into further education and training.
This professional qualification allows participants to volunteer for a range of local organisations, including Portsmouth FoodCycle and Food Bank. Volunteering opportunities may also be available at Pompey in the Community supporting our range of community activities.
